Here is the final instalment
of RED HEADS!!! It is a rather extensive list of famous red heads from history, modern day, mythology and literature.
Click "Read More" to see the list!!!
Judas Iscariot: The apostle
who betrayed Jesus for 30 pieces of silver.
The Weasley's (Harry Potter
series by J.K Rowling): The coolest ginger family in literature. They are a
family of flame haired witches and wizards from J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. Although the whole family is awesome and plays a huge role in the
series, I have to say that Molly Weasley is the most badass of all. She is
fiercely protective of the people she loves and has a pretty badass duel scene
with Bellatrix Lestrange (who I cant help but love because she is played by
Helena Bonham Carter)in the last book.
Albus Dumbledore (Harry
Potter series by J.K Rowling): WHAT!!!!????!!!! I KNOW!!! But if you remember
in Chamber of Secrets in the flash back to Albus having a conversation
with Tom Riddle on the staircase, he is described as “A tall wizard with sweeping auburn hair and a
beard…”. This raises the badassness of red heads a pile of notches in my
book!!!
Nicole Kidman: (Born 1967): Australian
actress, singer and producer. Nominated 106 times, 61 wins and 1 Oscar to
date. Best known for “The Others”, “Practical Magic” (MY FAVOURITE), “Moulin
Rouge”, “Batman Forever”, “The Stepford Wives”, “Cold Mountain” and “Eyes Wide
Shut”. She is also a Goodwill and UNICEF Ambassador, helped raise money for the
Women’s Cancer Program and a mother.
Lily Cole (Born 1988):
British model and actress. She started modeling at the age of 14 and was on the
cover of British Vogue at 16. Lily modeled, and continues to model, for some of
the greatest designers of our time including; Alexander McQueen, Jean Paul Gaultier, Chanel, Prada, Christian Lacroix and John Galliano,
to name a few. She was named one of the Top 30 models of the 2000’s by Vogue
Paris. Lily is an ambassador for the
children’s charity Global Angels as well as supports Population Matters,
WaterAid, Environmental Justice Foundation, PETA and raised awareness for the
endangered Asian elephant. She has acted in films such as “St. Trinians”, “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus” and “Snow White and the Huntsman”.
Kate Winslet (Born 1975):
British actress and singer. She was the youngest person in history to acquire 6
Academy Award nominations. She won an Academy Award for “The Reader” in 2008 and an Emmy
for her roll in “Mildred Peirce” (2011). She has also won awards from the
Screen Actors Guild, Hollywood Foreign Press Association and British Academy of
Film and Television Arts. She is best
known for her roles in “Titanic”, “Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind” and
“Hamlet”. She is also mum to 3 kids, Mia, Joe and Bear.
Jessica Rabbit: Fictional
wife of Roger Rabbit in “Who Framed Roger Rabbit”. She is portrayed as tall,
voluptuous, and sultry. Jessica Rabbit
is a symbol of beauty and a lot of women attempt to look like her and emulate
her perfect hourglass figure. Although she looks seems quite one-dimensional at
first glance, she proves to be compassionate, brave and selfless as well as
skilled in combat. She married Roger Rabbit because he “makes her laugh”.
Cleopatra (69-30 BCE): One of
the most famous Queens in history. She formed political ties while having romantic
relationships with Mark Antony and Julius Ceasar. She was considered incredibly
beautiful. It is said that she used Henna to increase the redness of her hair.
Poison Ivy: This eco friendly
super hero has always been a favorite of mine. She shoots vines from her hands
and is slightly off kilter. I dig it. Also that green spandex bodysuit is
pretty saucy.
Geri Halliwell (Born 1972):
Known best for being Ginger Spice, part of the girl group Spice Girls. MY FAVOURITE SPICE GIRL! GIRL POWER!
L. Ron Hubbard (1911-1986):
Founder of the Church of Scientology. Was a fiction author before starting Scientology.
Aphrodite: Goddess of beauty
and love in Greek Mythology. Aphrodite was born when Cronos castrated his
father, Uranus and threw his severed
family jewels into the ocean. The sea
began to foam and out from the aphros (sea foam), rose Aphrodite. Although she married the god Hephaestus, she
had many affairs with both gods and humans.
Anne Shirley (Anne of Green
Gables by L.M. Montgomery): One of my
all time favorite gingers! She has the most vivid imagination and a love for
all things magical and beautiful. I adore
everything about this quirky girl except for the fact that she hated her red
hair and freckles.
Nero Emperor of Rome (37
A.D.-68 A.D.): Nero took the throne at 17 years of age after his uncles death and had his mother
killed because she tried to control him. He executed Christians and anyone who
opposed him. Until 59 A.D., Nero was
considered a good and generous leader. He ended capital punishment, allowed
slaves to have a voice if treated badly by their masters and lowered taxes. He
also supported athletics and the arts. After his mother’s death, Nero became obsessed
with spending insane amounts of money on artistic pursuits and began executing
anyone who spoke ill of him or his reign. After the Great Fire (which many believed Nero started so that he could build a huge Villa for himself), he
began to charge more taxes and sold political positions to make money for his
building projects. When governor Gaius Julius Vindex stood up against Nero and
his tax policies, many of Nero’s followers turned against him. Fearing for his
life, Nero fled and committed suicide.
Helen of Troy (or Helen of
Sparta): Was the cause of the start of the Trojan War, which lasted 10 years. She
was the daughter of King Tyndareus and Leda. She was married to Menelaus, who later became king of Mycenea. Helen
fell in love and ran away with Paris of Troy. Menelaus “launched 1000 ships” to
bring Helen home by force if necessary. This began the Trojan War. She is considered one of the most beautiful women in history.
Axl Rose (Born 1962): One of
the founding members of Guns N’ Roses and one of the most controversial artists
in the music industry. Axl, born William Bruce Rose Jr, has been in trouble
with the law since and early age. He played in many bands in Los Angeles such
as L.A. Guns and Hollywood Rose until he formed Guns N’ Roses and released
their first album in 1987 titled “Appetite for Destruction”. GNR skyrocketed for fame and remain one of
the greatest rock bands of all time. Guns N’ Roses fell apart after years of
internal fighting and increasingly erratic behaviour from all the band members.
All of the original members of the band left and Axl formed the “new’ GNR with
new members. Guns N’ Roses was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in
2012, but Axl did not attend. His
personal life was just as rocky as his professional life. He was divorced
multiple times and has been accused of abuse on more than one occasion. He is
also well known for extreme alcohol and drug abuse.
Napoleon Bonaparte
(1769-1821): First Emperor of France from 1804-1814 and again in 1815. Also
possibly the most famous French military leader and was a significant player in
the French Revolution. He abdicated the throne in 1814 and was exiled but briefly
returned to power in 1815. After the
defeat at Waterloo, he was exiled again to Island of Saint Helena, where he
died at 51.
Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658): British
military and political leader. Later Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of
England, Scotland and Ireland. Although
he had little military experience, he was able to form a very effective army
and lead military campaigns in various countries. He died of natural causes,
was buried, but exhumed and posthumously executed in 1661.
Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890):
Post-Impressionist painter who is most popular for his masterpiece "Starry Night". He lived a
very private life and was mentally ill. He famously cut off the lobe of his ear in
1888.
Elizabeth I (1533-1603):
Queen of England during the Tudor Era. Daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boelyn.
She claimed the throne at the age of 25 and reigned for 44 years. She famously
never married or had an heir. Because of
this she was known as the “Virgin Queen”.
King David (1037 BC- 967 BC):
Sucessor of Saul, King of Israel. Slayer of the legendary Philistine giant
Goliath. Credited with composing most of the Book of Pslams.
Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826):
Was the chief author of the Declaration of Independence and the 3rd
U.S. President from 1801-1809. He died on the 50th anniversary of
the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Emily Dickenson (1830-1886):
Although her work was not massively popular until after her death, Emily was a very talented poet. She became incredibly popular when her
family released most of he poetry after her death. Much of her poetry dealt
with death and immortality. Her writing style was not common for the time but
now she is considered one of the most important American Poets of all time.
Margaret Sanger (1879-1966):
Was one of the most influential people in helping women begin to make decisions
for their own bodies and an advocate for birth control. One of her main
organizations would later become Planned Parenthood. She actively campaigned for the legalization
of birth control.
Carol Burnett (Born 1933):
Famous American comedienne and actress. Is best known for her variety show, The
Carol Burnett Show (1967-1978).
Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme
(Born 1948): One of the most well known members of the Manson Family. She was
part of the Tate-LaBianca murders in 1969 as well as the assassination attempt
on US President Gerald Ford in 1975. Because she had a “passive” role in the
Tate-LaBianca murders, she was not incarcerated. She received a life sentence
for the assassination attempt she is serving in Texas.
Lizzie Borden (1860-1927):
One of the most famous female murderers in history. She murdered her father and step-mother in
Massachusetts in 1892. Although Lizzie was tried and acquitted, the public
scorn and publics knowledge of what she had been accused of punished her for the
rest of her life. Her evil
deeds have been immortalized in the jump rope rhyme:
"Lizzie Borden had an axe
She gave her mother 40 whacks,
When she saw what she had done
She gave her father 41."
Galileo Galilei (1564-1642):
Italian scientist and scholar. He pioneered modern physics and astronomy. First to propose that the sun was the center
of the universe (The Copernican Theory), not the earth, as was previously
believed. He was accused of heresy twice
by the Roman Catholic Church for his work and the books he wrote on his
discoveries.
Lilith: Originates in Babylonian demonology and traveled through
literature and myth in ancient Egypt, Israel and Greece. Although she appears
briefly in the Bible, she is better known as Adams first wife in Jewish
writings. She is famous for refusing to lie beneath Adam because
she was his equal, not inferior. She was
and still is a popular presence in art. Michelangelo portrayed her as a serpent
woman spun around the tree of knowledge.
She was also featured in writings by Dante Gabriel Rossetti and James
Joyce, to name a few. Although she is
regularly depicted and described as evil or demon like, she was and is
described and depicted as incredibly beautiful. (I wanted to keep all these
short, but there is so much information about her!!! Use your Google machine
and find our more!!!)
Boudicca, Queen of the Iceni
